It is with regret that we inform you that on 8th March the members of the County Team took a vote on whether the County Sunrise Ceremony Camp should go ahead and the result was a decision to cancel the event.

The reasons are many, but in general many DCs felt there was not enough obvious support in their districts for the event, especially given its midweek dates (Gilwell’s decision, not ours) and the other events that many districts are already planning locally as centenary celebrations. One could argue that Gilwell has suggested too many ways to celebrate our centenary.

Furthermore, members of the county Finance Committee needed an assurance of numbers – and therefore camp fee income – that the organisers could not at that time give. As deposits on equipment would need to be paid before final numbers were known and as the DCs were not completely confident of grass roots’ support, the members of the Finance Committee felt unable to back the project. No possibility of a financial loss on the event could be entertained.
